Everyone’s checked out the Campus Bookstore and certainly the Express Bus. Well, here’s a hand-picked list of underused resources every Stony Brook University student should have in their back pocket.
1. Lynda.com
Ever wanted to download a manual into your brain? This tutorial website, free for Stony Brook students, features a library of courses that guides beginners through computer animation, audio mixing, photography and more.
2. HBO GO
Being a campus resident now comes with HBO GO, which lets members enjoy the full archive of every HBO TV show anytime they want.
3. SBU sub-Reddit
This campus version of the popular online forum, Reddit, is where students can discuss topics, such as campus clubs, lost textbooks and the unbearably hot temperature in residence halls.
4. Print from Anywhere
The long lines at the SINC site print stations can get tedious, especially when you have an essay due in five minutes. The SINC Print From Anywhere Client saves you precious time by allowing you to send print jobs to the SINC site printing queue straight from your computer.
5. Free Tech Support
The Client Support team on the fifth floor of the library in room S-5410 will help fix technical issues with your computer including viruses and other problems. Much better than talking to an automated robot.
6. Staller Center Student Discounts
Starting on the first day of each month, the Staller Center for the Arts offers a 50 percent student discount on tickets for its shows that month. You heard it correctly — half off.
7. The 7Bus
This new luxury bus is open for students traveling to and from New York City and Rego Park, Queens from Stony Brook University with a starting fare of only $7.
8. Burger King Discount
Using Wolfie Wallet, you can save 10 percent off at the local Burger King by the intersection of Stony Brook Road. Subway and Cabo Fresh are just a few other nearby participating restaurants. Just make sure to give them your ID before you pay.
9. Underground Racquetball
Although the facilities in the Sports Complex are reserved for student athletes, the basement features racquetball courts and a wrestling room that is open to the community.
10. Overnight Laundry Service
My Laundry Station is a drop-off and pick-up laundry service that saves you that trip down to the basement of your dorm building. For 80 cents per pound, fresh clothes will appear in your My Laundry locker the next day.
Enjoy Client Support while in college. You’ll rarely have better IT, even in the private sector. It’s the best-run service department on campus, bar-none.
