It is (almost) common knowledge that rock music started with African-Americans. However, not many people can name more than five rock artists aside from Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

This playlist encompasses rock bands that feature black guitarists, singers or solo artists, and includes many sub-genres of rock, such as funk, punk and indie.

Whether the artist is mixed race like Slash, Kerry Leatham of Peter and Kerry or notoriously known for being a black rock star that shredded like Hendrix, their music is featured.

Not every black rock musician can be featured, unfortunately, but there are definitely many more from today or yesterday’s rock.

Note: Prince would have a song on this playlist, but his music is not on Spotify and other streaming sites.
