It’s that time of the semester again, folks! The gun has sounded for that notoriously brutal class hunt, and the first-in-liners have already plucked most of the ripe ones. But for those of you who got stuck with late selection dates, and are feeling like the “last to be picked in gym class,” hope is not lost! There are tons of fantastic classes waiting to be filled. You just have to ask around!
Here are our staff’s picks for the top ten MUST TAKE classes:
1. HUF 211: French Cinema
DEC D/SBC ARTS
Materials required for class: Multiple bags of popcorn because you’ll be watching endless French films. Is your schedule bombarded with classes that are capable of sending you to the mental ward? If so, we recommend you switch one of those mind-melters for HUF 211. It’s an easy and enjoyable “A.”
2. PHI 108: Logical and Critical Reasoning (II)
DEC B/SBC ESI, HUM
You’ve seen “Alice in Wonderland.” Well, now’s your chance to join the Mad Hatter’s tea party of philosophical discussion. Okay, so maybe you’re not actually hangin’ with the Mad Hatter, but the professor of PHI 108 has a similar look and is just as fun. If anything, you should take the class just for the sake of having him.
3. LIN 301: Phonology
Ever mouth out ridiculous sounds while spelling out a word? Ever get graded on those sounds? Now you can! In LIN 301, you’ll learn how to write out the sounds of our everyday words.
4. SOC 340: Sociology of Human Reproduction
DEC H/SBC STAS
Professor Catherine Marrone is a goddess whose outfits are always on fleek! In this class, you’ll be watching a lot of intriguing films and listening to interesting guest speakers. Marrone is very entertaining and makes the class as great as her clothing
5. ANT 210: Sunken Cities and Pirates: The World of Underwater Archaeology
DEC F/SBC SBS
Can we just say that the title of this class already makes it cool? Who wouldn’t want to spend a few hours a week learning about the seven seas and those who dared sail them? This class is incredibly unique and mind-gripping! Time to get your sea legs wet, Seawolves!
6. POL 101: World Politics
DEC F/SBC GLO, SBS
That moment when you notice questions from the study guide are on the test is so beautiful that some of us even shed a few tears. Well, get out the tissues because this will be your life in POL 101. The study guides are the exact replicas of the tests!
7. CCS 206: Cinema History: Post-War-Present
DEC D/SBC ARTS
Spend your afternoons watching the classics! Get ready for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “House of the Flying Daggers” and “Back to the Future.” After the final, all I had to say was “Marty, we gotta go back!”
8. HIS 378: War and the Military
DEC F/ SBC SBS+
This class makes war fun! Okay, so maybe that’s not the best thing to say, but our point still stands. HIS 378 is enjoyable, the workload is light and the professor is wonderful. My advice is to bite the bullet and conquer this class.
9. ARS 205: Foundations: Idea and Form
DEC D/SBC ARTS
You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate art, and you don’t have to be an art major to take an art class. ARS 205 is a great class for students looking to express themselves. Don’t be intimidated, it might not come easy, but you will enjoy every minute of it.
10. SOC 247: Sociology of Gender
DEC K/SBC SBS
“I took it for fun, and I ended up being a sociology major afterwards.”
Sociology classes are very popular here at SBU. Students find them very interesting and not-so-heavy on the workload. Even better, they cover a wide range of DEC’s.
