“It’s true, all of it. The Dark Side, the Jedi. They are real,” and they are all back!
The newest trailer of the movie, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” has almost everything a “Star Wars” fan can think of: The Force, the lightsaber, the Jedi, the storm troopers, the Millennium Falcon, the X-wing fighters and space battles.
The trailer, compared to the previous two, does a better job at introducing the characters. The first two trailers showed some scenes and characters in the movie, but we don’t know much about their identities. While in this one, we can finally have a peek at their backgrounds.
The trailer starts with Rey, who is likely to be the main role of the movie. She seems to be a mechanic who has been living on the desert planet called Jakku and never been to the outside world- sounds familiar, doesn’t it?- and as she said, she is “nobody.”
Then we see Finn, a storm trooper whose fighter was shot and landed on a desert planet, possibly Jakku. “I was raised to do one thing,” he said in the trailer, “but I’ve got nothing to fight for.”
Although the reason remains unknown, the lost former storm trooper later joined the Resistance and started an adventure with Rey and Han Solo.
The “Star Wars” movies have a tradition of bringing up cool villains, such as Darth Vader and Darth Maul — I guess you have to be cool to be a Sith then. Even the old Count Dooku was pretty sexy to me. The tradition has been carried on by our new villain, Kylo Ren, who wore a black mask and a black hood and used a red lightsaber. Ren was not a Sith, but he was an admirer of Darth Vader. In the trailer, he looked at the remains of Darth Vader’s helmet, pledging that he will “finish what you’ve started.”
Then we see some of the supporting roles: Han Solo and Leia; Chewbacca; Poe Dameron, a pilot of the Resistance army; BB-8, Rey’s droid; and R2D2.
The trailer definitely solved some of the questions I had for the characters but also brought some more:
- Where is Luke Skywalker? We know he is in the movie, but we haven’t really seen him anywhere. The only shot in the trailer that could potentially be him is the one where a person in a black hood putting his mechanical hand on R2D2. And he is not on the official poster, either.
- What exactly did Vader start that Ren wants to finish for him? In previous movies, Vader was monitoring the construction of Death Stars. And we see a new type of Death Star on the official poster. Could that be what Ren is working on?
- What are Rey and Finn’s last names? The director J.J.Abrams said that it was intentional not to release their last names. Could one of them have the last name Skywalker? We’ll see.
I’ve watched the new trailer at least 10 times since it came out and 10 more times for this review. I can’t wait to see the entire movie on the big screen. Good news is that we are less than two months away from the release date, Dec. 18. The bad news is that we still have about two months to wait. But nothing is better than watching a brand new “Star Wars” movie around Christmas time, so the wait is worth it.
