The Union basement was buzzing with voices on Tuesday night coming from the students wanting to escape their dorms and stress from the built up work due to the snow days. The line began at the basement corridor where the craft center is and led to the SINC site.
The popularity of Craft Night is thought to be accredited to the flyers and the creative environment. The Top 100 Hits played from a speaker in the back of the room as students of all majors and ages maneuvered around the room to use the materials set at individual tables and stations. It was a free event offered to students who are not only interested in crafts, but also as a way to relieve stress.
Tonight, they made tie-dye shirts with their own shirts or shirts provided by the Craft Center.
Tazmin Begum, a sophomore respiratory care major, said it was a good way to meet people. “A lot of people don’t have time to do this on their own and the people in charge organize everything,” said Begum. “And we have to come and participate, and we can find three hours once a week to do that.”
Different tables provided different uses: one table for the hot glue gun, two tables covered in pieces of fabric, two set up with stations of dye and another two set up with spray paint. Sharanjit Kaur, a junior health science major and an intern at the craft center, handed out t-shirts to the students who were arriving.
Sean Patrick,a freshman computer science major, thought that craft night is vital at this time during the semester.
“It helps relieve a lot of stress from students; that’s highly needed, especially with all the storms we’ve been having and the weird schedule we’ve been keeping,” Patrick said. “Crafts really kind of resets and helps you relax.”
