Campus media outlets are not only for journalism majors. There are benefits for any person who joins, no matter their major. Do not go through your entire college career not taking advantage of such a glorious opportunity! Here are five reasons why ANYONE should write for a campus publication:
1. Strengthen your writing skills
Working with journalism majors, people who are probably writing and editing every single day, will only help your writing skills. And no matter what profession you go into, employers will be looking for people who can write well and communicate through their writing.
2. Meet new people
College is about the education, but a large part of the college experience is meeting new people. Some of your future best friends could be writing on one of your school’s publications, but you will not know unless you join.
3. Have your work published
Again, no matter what profession you go into, potential employers will be very impressed if they see that your work has been in a publication. It separates you from the others. Also, your grandparents will love seeing your byline. They will tell all of their friends their grandchild is famous. Just watch, it will happen.
4. Make connections
All it takes is knowing one special person with that one special connection to make your dreams come true! Take it from journalism majors, every single person is a potential source, and you never know who might help you get a job after you graduate.
5. Have fun and relieve stress from your classes
Most of all, writing and reporting with people you like can be a great time. You will not see any math or chemistry equations, and writing for a campus publication can be something new and exciting. So go to a publication meeting, you never know what might happen when you walk through the door.
