Matt Politoski is a musician who isn’t afraid to indulge in more than one taste. The Boston based musician’s main focus is his band, Animal Flag, an indie rock band with a touch of alternative country in the style of Wilco, Bright Eyes or Ryan Adams.
However, this artist isn’t content with being classified in just this sound.
Behind the scenes, Politoski has been working on an electronic project under the name Bad Dreams. This is not an entirely foreign concept to the artist. In 2013, he released an album as Animal Flag titled “The Sounds of Sleep,” which has a heavy draw from produced electronic music. The artist also released a drone-instrumental EP earlier in August titled “Big Country 2000.” This week he released the project’s second EP, “It’s Such A Beautiful Day,” which shows the artist making fun, yet emotionally sound, electronic music.
The title track, “It’s Such A Beautiful Day,” says a lot about the album. It begins with an airy synthesizer backed with programmed beats that serve as a welcome to the listener. He tells a story that plays to the emotions of the listener saying: “My friend Bill, he has a problem/It’s hard for him to keep things straight/He’s haunted by things he’s forgotten/His brain has trouble keeping things in place/but still he says ‘it’s such a beautiful day.'”
The lyrics wear the mask of a simply well written electronic song, but there’s something more. The artist tells a story that’s got heart to it. It talks about life, death and the emotions we feel staring into that void.
The rest of the album follows in this theme. There are these underlying themes of self-doubt, love, reliability and depression that fall on the unique synthesizer and beat arrangements. He uses the produced drums and keyboard samples the same way Damien Rice uses his acoustic guitar or Elton John uses his piano, to serve as a vessel to carry the lyrics.
The sound on the album does get a bit repetitive at times. However, it’s a reason for the listener to really dig deeper as to the message the songs are getting across. The only other fault on the album is that it ended too quickly, it was a fun listen that leaves the listener wanting more.
Matt Politoski is not an artist you want to lose track of, and his music will always keep you guessing.
