Some of the Indie editors decided to try the new Unicorn Frappucino at Starbucks that will be released on the Stony Brook campus on April 19th. Thanks to Dara Bahk, our copy editor who works at Starbucks, we were able to try them a night early when the store at the library gave out free samples. Here is what each of us had to say about the drink:
The mini shot-glass sized cups were drizzled with a sour blue syrup, and the cotton candy pink drink was topped with whipped cream and blue and pink sprinkles. It initially tasted very sweet, but it became a little too sweet as I kept drinking it. Yes, it was very sugary, but I actually enjoyed it in small quantities. The mango flavor, the sour aftertaste and the creamy sweet finish all made the drink great, but it made it overwhelming. I probably wouldn’t order it in a venti, but I’d treat myself to a tall once in a while.
The pretty pink, blue and purple drink tastes the way I believe a unicorn would taste. It was extremely sweet, but it was a good sweet. However, I couldn’t get a venti unicorn frappucino. That would just have my hands shaking and eye twitching from a sugar rush. Also, I did have a sugar rush an hour after drinking a shot of this drink.
I agree with my fellow editors that the frap is aesthetically pleasing, but I’m not sure I could really drink it again. In addition to not knowing whether or not I’m allergic to mangoes, I wasn’t a fan of the taste. I did enjoy the initial sweetness, although I can’t see myself getting even a “tall” of this drink. It’s too sweet for me. I had a frappucino phase in my life, but that has (thankfully) passed me by. Maybe in another life, Unicorn Frappucino. Remember me.
The Unicorn Frappucino is definitely fun to look at– if you could actually taste the colors blue and pink, it would be in this drink. They drizzled sour blue swirls throughout the bright pink frappucino– a nice offset to the extremely sweet, slightly-mango flavor. It tasted kind of like an Orange Julius, except with even more sugar. I would have to agree with the other editors, this drink is good in moderation, but will I be getting it on the regular? I think this drink should stay rare, like the unicorn itself.
