Like a lot of kids, I grew up loving Legos and creating my own imaginary worlds, but I never once believed a story about plastic building blocks could make good a movie. So I was thunderstruck after seeing what is now my favorite animated movie.
The Lego Movie is that special mix of childish fun and witty adult humor that really does make it
entertaining for everyone. But altogether, there are 7 reasons why I love the The Lego Movie.
1. Batman is in top form.
Will Arnett is the best Batman, period. He’s a funny, arrogant, self-aware anti-hero that has his own line of jokes called “Bat Puns.“ He’s even an aspiring musician. In short, Lego Batman is everything we want the Dark Knight to be.
2. It pokes fun at social norms.
The Lego Movie is in many ways a great satire for how much crap our society is willing to put up with. Lego people go to work, buy products they don’t need (including hilariously expensive coffee) and go to sleep at night happily knowing tomorrow will be more of the same. But when the seams begin to unravel, it’s not one of the many superheroes that saves the day. The hero is just an ordinary guy who rises up when called, and that’s an important message.
3. Liam Neeson’s character is genius.
Liam Neeson has well earned reputation for playing hard-hitting action heroes that kick ass and take names. But this time there’s a new twist. Neeson plays both sides of the coin, Badcop/Goodcop, who also happens to be the villain’s henchman. The two bicker throughout the movie, providing a simple, moral battle that children can follow and hilarious side-gag for everyone else.
4. It could be the greatest mashup of all time.
Imagine ninjas, Abraham Lincoln, pirates and Superman in a room and you have a rough idea of the type of mayhem that goes down in The Lego Movie. It draws from it’s entire catalogue of Lego construction sets that span across multiple time periods and science fiction worlds. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like for Batman and Han Solo to meet, this is the movie for you.
5. The main character is just a regular guy.
The main character in The Lego Movie is an ordinary construction worker named Emmet. For the first half he’s just a number in the crowd, but that’s not who he wants to be. He struggles to make friends and contribute to the movie’s team of heroes, despite being told over and over again that his ideas are dumb. But he doesn’t give up, and it’s his perseverance that carries him through to save the day. It’s a heart-warming story that everyone can relate to.
6. It has a warped sense of humor.
The Lego Movie falls into that rare breed of kid’s movies that are just as funny for adults. To accomplish this, its characters are thrown into the most hilariously random scenarios. And that’s how Batman ends up in what can only be described as the inside of the Mad Hatter’s brain.
7. Everything is awesome.
In an era where most of the major blockbusters are over two hours long, The Lego Movie is a very satisfying 100 minutes long. The action moves quickly but still reaches deep themes like family, friendship and what it really means to fit in. There are even a few surprising moments where it breaks the fourth wall. But really, The Lego Movie is great because there isn’t a single moment that’s boring. Everything is awesome.
