Rhys Harper never wanted people to only see him as a transgender person. So this 31 year-old photographer founded the Transcending Gender Project to make sure that no one else felt that they were solely defined by their gender either. The project consists of portraits of transgender people in their everyday environments, or in the way that they want the world to see them. Harper is taking his project across the country and stopped at Stony Brook University to share his stories and show that everyone has “gendered experiences” and that we should all live without making assumptions about someone just based on their gender identity.
