Stony Brook University held its annual fall-themed program, the Residence Hall Association Comic Con, on Oct. 26 in the Student Activity Center’s Ballroom A.
The RHA Comic Con is an annual multi-genre entertainment and comic convention dedicated to fans of comics, fantasy films, anime, video games, toys and television shows.
After a yearlong wait for the second RHA Comic Con, students at Stony Brook came together to make crafts, play games like vintage Mario Kart and, of course, cosplayed as their favorite fantasy character to honor the traditions of Comic Con.
Students also enjoyed fun fair foods such as fairytale-like cotton candy and some delicious extra buttery popcorn.
While cosplayers covered the whole of the ballroom greeting people, Comic Con goers enjoyed the many craft stations like the D.I.Y fairy dust, glow-in-the-dark jars, a slime station and even an elaborate display of the most popular Star Wars merchandise all made from Legos.
Comic Con is a great place for “nerds” like Amber Dong to dress up as Miyamizu Mitsuha, the main character of Japanese anime movie “Your Name,” without being stared down.
“I really like such events. I meet people who like the same things as me, which is rare,” Dong, a student at Stony Brook University, said. “People here are friendly and curious about your costume, not trying to make fun of it.”
Towards the end of the evening, students met with one more surprise. As ticket numbers were called out randomly, students won a bunch of merchandise, like a hardcover illustrated book of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” a giant Pokémon ball, canvas backpacks and other goodies.
Esteban Idrovo, the Senior Vice President of RHA was quite pleased with the turnout of the event.
“Last year when we were here for almost six hours, almost 300 people turned up. This year we hit the 200 mark within an hour,” Idrovo said.
The night ended with a screening of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which drew cosplayers, Comic Con goers and J.K. Rowling fans alike, into the fantasy world of Harry Potter.
