Barbara Chernow, the former senior vice president of Administration at Stony Brook University, has returned to her alma mater, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, to serve as the university’s executive vice president for Finance and Administration.
“I will miss working with the brilliant and hard-working students, and faculty who really care about them,” Chernow said. Since 1998, Chernow worked with Stony Brook University and has implemented positive changes for 16-years at the university. From decreasing crimes on campus to providing cultural dining experiences for students, Chernow continued to put the university’s educational needs as her main priority.
Chernow graduated from Brown in 1979, and in 1982 her career in educational administration started at the Board of Education. Chernow was the director of the Office of Public Transportation and supervised about 3,100 school buses while maintaining rider eligibility. In 1992, she was in charge of the budgeting and accounting of a multi-billion dollar plan project. When Chernow came to Stony Brook University, her passion for improving the educational system did not slow down.
In 2006, Chernow became the vice president for facilities and services. In this position, Chernow had multiple successful projects including additional energy conservation efforts and safety services. She also helped create a 246-acre research and development park located north of the university on Stony Brook Road that houses business incubators as part of START-UP NY. Chernow continued to promote a safe environment by supervising the vehicle charging stations and solar powered parking meters.
At Brown Chernow will be working with the university’s Provost as well as the University Resources Committee to plan an annual budget. She will also oversee non-academic operations. Chernow will serve as a member of the Cabinet and Executive Committee.
Although Chernow has moved on to a new position, she said she has not forgotten about her home at Stony Brook. “I will always remain proud of our administration staff who are intent on making Stony Brook excel in all it does and contractors and consultants who bring their ‘A’ game everyday,” Chernow added.
