Underreported Crimes

Stony Brook underreported campus crime in 2006, an audit by the New York State Comptroller’s office found. The comptroller found that Stony Brook failed to correctly report more crimes than any of the other SUNY schools that were audited.

Robert J. Lenahan, the Stony Brook's director of Campus Emergency Management, will be the new chief of the university police.

Stony Brook’s Campus Residences hired eight security guards in August to patrol the residential quads at early morning hours when student workers are off-shift.

Recreation Center

All but one of the special construction projects on campus are on hold in the wake of a budget crisis at the New York State level. Of the twelve “strategic initiative” capital projects that were approved in Stony Brook’s last five-year plan, only one – the construction of a student recreation center – is still going forward.

A 21-person committee, chaired by alumnus Richard Nasti, is responsible for seeking out the person who might replace University President Shirley Strum Kenny after she retires next June. At this stage, they're laying out the qualities the school is looking for in its next president.

The Research Assistants of Stony Brook University and the SUNY Research Foundation began hearings before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) last Friday. The hearings, which continued all week, are a precursor to a secret ballot election which will determine whether or not the research assistants will officially join a union – in this case, the Communication Workers of America.

Piping

The university is in the process of redoing the piping for the school's high temperature hot water system. The ongoing project includes replacing the steel piping that has been in place since 1974. The project has begun in the area around Roosevelt, Kelly and Tabler quads and will go all the way around campus.

Stony Brook is bracing for further seismic cuts that are now brewing at the state level. Earlier this month, President Shirley Strum Kenny called for a hiring freeze for state-funded positions. By state decree, capital projects, like much of the construction and renovation going on around campus, have almost totally halted.
