Men's Basketball Dropped by Wagner
|
By Erin McKinley The Seawolves lost on Saturday leaving them 1-2 so far this season. The game, played in Pritchard Gymnasium, was close, but the Wagner Seahawks (2-1) prevailed with a 65-62 victory. The game started slow with the Seahawks taking the lead, leading by six points after the first ten minutes of the game. The Seawolves, playing in front of a packed gym of fans, battled through and stayed within striking range. The Seawolves first half was filled with sloppy passes and missed layups, causing the team to fall behind by a score of 32-28 at the half. But after half time, the team picked up their play, and made the game competitive. With a little bit more than 15 minutes left in the game the Seawolves gained the lead for the first time on a Chris Martin jumpshot, putting the team ahead 36-34. The lead went back and forth for the rest of the game, finally ending with a Seahawks victory, the Seahawks pulling away during the last four minutes of the game. “I like the toughness we showed today,” says Steve Pikiell, the head coach for the Seawolves, “We can’t allow the other team to shoot 53.8 percent and expect to win. I like the direction our team is headed in, we just have to learn to make a few more plays down the stretch.” Tommy Brenton led the Seawolves in scoring with 15 points. Dallis Joyner and Chris Martin each added 14 points. Wagner was paced by Jamal Smith's 21 points. The Seawolves must now shake off two straight losses and prepare for their matchup against the American Eagles (2-1) on Tuesday. |
