Seawolves Football Has Record Setting Weekend

By Chris Monahan

For a team to have one player rush for over 200 yards in a game is quite an accomplishment. But having two players from the same team achieve that feat is almost unheard of.

That is exactly what Seawolves running backs Edwin Gowins and Conte Cuttino did on Saturday in the team's eye-opening 68-9 non-conference victory over Iona. Gowins finished the game with 278 yards on 19 carries, while Cuttino racked up 209 yards on 17 carries. Each runner had three touchdowns apiece.

As a team, Stony Brook compiled 635* total rushing yards, setting a new school record. Gowins broke the school's single game individual rushing record.

To say they had an easy time running the ball would be an understatement.

The Seawolves didn’t waste time in bludgeoning their opponent as they scored a touchdown on all six of their drives in the first half. Seawolves quarterback Dayne Hoffman barely broke a sweat, attempting only seven passes the entire game, completing three. All he had to do was simply hand the ball off to Stony Brook’s dynamic running backs. Even third string running back, junior Tarrant Anderson, got in on the action with 114 yards on 18 carries.

After a 1-5 start in which the offense struggled mightily, the Seawolves have turned it around as of late, winning three of their last four contests while averaging 37 points in those games.

"We have matured as an offense," said Stony Brook head coach Chuck Priore. "We had some young kids that had to step up and play, and we have figured out our identity. We made some decisions that we were going to set our personality as an offense with our run game. Over the course of the past couple of weeks we have proven that."

Stony Brook has an overall record of 4-6, with a 2-2 record in the Big South Conference. The Seawolves look to end the season on a high note when they host conference opponent VMI in the team’s final game on Nov. 15. A win would have Stony Brook finish 3-2 in the Big South.
